In Short
Behind thick burgundy curtains hide an impressive mahogany bar, flickering votives, servers in long white aprons--and an upscale "Sideways" clientele who comes for the conversation, not to watch ESPN (no TVs here). The chef/co-owner--who hails from incredibly popular nearby Django--places a patent emphasis on locally raised ingredients, while her co-owner/bartender husband prides himself on low markups on stellar smaller wines.

We didn't even get to the dinner. Our waiter was SO RUDE that we left, though it was late and we were starving. Everything was overpriced, and I didn't see anything that interesting on the menu. It took over 15 minutes before we were served a drink (at the bar), and the bartender seemed to hate us...he kept looking over and frowning at us. He finally came over and spoke to us in a short, peremptory tone.

I don't care for this place. To get to the restaurant part, you have to walk through the seedy, neighborhood bar area. The restaurant space seems like you are sitting in an added on trailer. It is like a long corridor they put tables in. The food wasn't good, yet it was still expensive.

Kip pours a mean drink and more than 2 will leave you a little loopy. There's a full restaurant area and a patio in this place, but the bar is the coolest place to sit so be careful and drink slowly. The menu seems to change really frequently and is always interesting.

Where to Sit:
The bar's 18 stools--and the barkeep's talent for casual conversation--make this area a perfect spot for wining and dining oneself. The bar leads to a petite white-tablecloth dining room which overlooks a secluded courtyard filled with tables and chairs.
The Extras:
The menu offers at least one main vegetarian dish as well as multiple veggie-friendly smaller plates.
When to Go:
Except for Sunday, the bar stays open until 2am.
Know Before You Go:
Dinners begin with slender, airy slices of just-baked Parmesan bread and lemon butter, and move on to seasonal dishes such as poached Bosc pear stuffed with fontina; tender veal cheeks with homemade pappardelle pasta; delicate, creamy cod brandade; and rich mousse-like chocolate pot de creme.
