WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT & EMBARRASSMENT!. I was VERY disappointed. Had to wait outside until my entire party arrived. After seated and our order was taken, it took 1-1/2 hours to get our order. When I commented about it to the owner, she said she knew the time we ordered. What does that mean?? When our meals did arrive, our server NEVER came back to ask us how everything was. On a positive note, my meal was ok. One friend said hers was bland. And the woman who sat to my right - well, her meal looked really bad. She kept pushing it around in her plate and it was obvious something was wrong. When the owner came to take our plates (not the server) there was still approximately 75% left in her plate and the owner didn't ask her how it was, or anything.. Were we offered a dessert after that outrageous length of time we waited...no! A cup of coffee?...NO. Too many mistakes. This restaurant won't be around much longer if they treat patrons this way.
Disappointing service. I have been to Geechee Girl before this visit, the food was always excellent and the service was always good (never great, but good). I met 2 friends for brunch this past Sunday (11/6), 1 friend had never been to Geechee Girl before. The server was horrible which was actually one of the owners of the restaurant I believe. When we asked questions about the menu she was very short with us, very slow to check on us (the restaurant was at 40% capacity), and we felt rushed out of the restaurant upon conclusion of our meal. I was so embarrassed as this was the place I selected for brunch and had given it such rave reviews. The chef came out and walked amongst the tables, never greeted the table or even gave a pleasant smile. Myself and 1 other person at the table had the omelet special, it was just okay - I could have made better at home. I am not sure I will come back here again nor am I certain that I will sing it praises again.
Best southern food this side of the Mississippi. The food stands for itself. Fresh organic and delicious. This should be highlighted and spoken about at the table! Everything was slow roasted and cooked from scratch and the back of the house needs to come into the front of the house. The food lost its charm when it was srved by a scared doe eyed waiter that looked like he was in the midst of rumspringa. The place should be packed! Two of us had appetizers and dinner for $55. The portions were large and the food was again superb! I wish the cook waited on us!
The staff is rude and cold.. My church group came in for brunch. There were 5 of us. The staff was cold and rude not friendly or attentive at all. The owner came out and spoke to one couple but never came to our table rather she just spoke with the help and stood around in the resturant. Never engaged our table at all. The resturant was empty and they wouldn't seat us until all were there for fear that not all of us would show up. The portions were very uneven and they were not willing to correct it. My group dines out often and we will never return again.
Great Chef - Unique menu - Warm atmosphere. I Love Geechee Girl! I think the owner is one of the best chefs in Philly. We?d rather bring out-of-town friends here than any spot in Center City. The food at Geechee Girl is unique, fresh and meticulously prepared. And yes, the service is slow but the wait-staff are lovely, friendly people who make the wait enjoyable. I like that the owner comes out of the kitchen later in the evening to chat. Overall, this is a warm and pleasant place to eat. I only wish there were more vegetarian options on the menu.
great food, terrible service. I was thrilled to find a sit-down restaurant in Germantown! I have eaten at the Geechee Girl Rice Cafe atleast 6 times, hoping each time for an improvement in service. Sadly, the service has not improved. Each time I have eaten at the Geechee Girl, the service has been terribly slow. Today, I had reservations, but I had to wait in the waiting area for a 1/2 hour. After we were seated, it was an hour and 15 minutes before we received our food. Each time I have been to the Geechee Girl, some item ordered was not received. Once, our side of biscuits was brought after we had eaten our entrees and the plates had been cleared. So we had to put our biscuits on the paper tablecloth while we ate. I am sad to report that this neighborhood restaurant has great potential, but has very disappointing service.
Absolutely awful - and not inexpensive, either. We were greeted by a person who directed us to the waiting area, telling us that she just had to set up the empty tables near the door. Just not for us, as it turned out - they were reserved. That would have been nice to know. We waited 1.5 hours (being told just ten minutes whenever we asked. We never would have stayed had they given us an honest estimate). It then took FOREVER to get mediocre food. Part of the order was wrong but we were starving and just wanted to leave at that point, so we just ate it. Im pretty sure most people ordering fried chicken in a restaurant are expecting it to be HOT and freshly cooked especially when its a SPECIAL, but this was refrigerator-cold. And dont even try to tell me its a southern thing its NOT. Never going back.
Good Food - Slow Service. I recently stopped in here on the advice of a friend. The food was really good; the catfish was friend in cornmeal just like my grandmother use to make. The service was was also top notch - the owner really took care of us - but it just took an exceptionally long to get our plates. I'd definitely go back, just not when I was in a hurry.
User review by eholden. First choice when friends come from out-of town. Especially if they have children. A fun and friendly spot for tasty food a little different from standard offerings. Moderate prices and BYOB make for an affordable night out.
