Unique, charming and REAL.
So, I've taken dance lessons at a few places, some good some not so good. Society Hill Dance Academy was the first place I ever truly felt like a person.
Social dancing can be intimidating for beginners or casual dancers. Nothing is worse than being asked to dance and getting that frustrated look or worse getting into an argument. So, when a friend invited me to their Friday night party, I was a little hesitant to get out on the floor. But by my 4th dance, I was totally relaxed. It was so not about showing off it was about having fun! Even the obviously advanced dancers were really accomodating and polite. I signed up for lessons that very night and haven't ever looked back.
If you are looking for talented, passionate and down-to-earth instructors in a supportive atmosphere, Society Hill Dance Academy is the studio for you.…
Do not come here for Private Lessons.
If you are just signing up for a few group beginner lessons, then fine. I've been there, its OK. If you are an engaged couple (most of the school's clientele), then I guess you get a good deal. But
whatever you do, do not take private lessons. This is when things turn ugly.
There school uses contracts or programs to for private lessons. These programs can go for a months or sometimes years. Contracts are illegal in some states and there are dance studios that frown upon this practice as well, because it gives the whole dance studio experience a black eye. Put it this way, you have debt for your credit card, car or maybe mortgage, do you want add dancing lessons to that list? (There is a pay as you go system that allows $135 for 45 minutes. But knowing, no one will agree to it, contracts are the only way you can find something affordable.)
If you answer yes, keep in mind Society Hill will want more $$ for you. I signed up for the Social Ease class, which is a bunch of prepaid classes for several months. Once Shana and my initial instructor knew that I would pay some $$$ for prepaid lessons, they try to encourage me to sign up for a competition that cost $10000 or sign up for a recital, without telling me that practice for recital is extra bucks along with the lessons.
As I mentioned, there are other dance studios that do not engaged in contracts and have an affordable pay-as-you-go system. Go to them if you want learn how to dance and not hurt your wallet at the same time.…
Fun Staff lots of energy. Had a great time at their belly dancing program last winter
Editorial Review by Citysearch Editors. Offers all forms of partnered dances as well as tap and hip-hop; packages, kids lessons and open house events available.
Best dance studio in town. A friend of mine recommended the studio to me last year as the "best dance studio" in town. I have to agree. I love this place. I do not have enough good things to say about it; excellent teachers, beautiful space, friendly staff; great music. I took several group classes (salsa, tango, etc) and the space was more than adequate for our purposes. Especially compared to other studios in town, the space could be considered "huge":) The prices are cheaper as well. There are classes for Singles; for kids, for wedding couples, in addition to general group classes-even hip hop and tap (my favorite) The only minus I can think of is that dancing is addictive:)…
