Great bar and atmosphere. I love stopping by this place on my way out for the evening. Great way to start off or end a night out. Food is tasty and the bartenders have personality- old school and elegant. One of my fave non pretentious places on the Square.
Way overpriced for what you get.
$80 (including tip) for a meal that I could get at Outback or Texas Steakhouses for 1/4 of the price (and Outback and Texas have better steaks!). I could somewhat rationalize the prize if the food was amazing, but it isn't. My steak was burned both times I went and the sides were no better than Boston Market! I can't believe this restaurant is so popular. I guess some people have more money than they know what to do with.
Do yourself (and your wallet) a favor and skip this one.
didnt like it. not that good. ive been to le bec , Capital grill, striped bass, ect , ect and know the difference from good dining and great dining. Smith and Wollensky's wasnt living up to the hype i thought it would. i didnt have the steak and know its known as a steak house, but they can put a little more effort in their seafood. Calamari was good, my bass was dry . prices were too high for such mediocer food and having to pay extra for a side dish is just dumb. good selection of wine though.
great steaks, not so great service. I chose this place to celebrate an anniversary with my boyfriend. First appearance was awesome, the host and hostess were very friendly. They led us upstairs to our table which was very charming, small, but charming. Our server Brian came over the second we sat down and asked us what we wanted to drink as if he was trying to rush us out. We were the youngest couple in the restaurant. After we placed our order it was as if he disappeared, his serving assistant was awesome making sure everything was going well, getting us our drink refills and replenishing us with our silverware. We had a large crab cake to start which was very tasty and filled with tons of crabmeat and not just filler ingredients. The Caesar salad is HUGE so definitely split it. The filet I ordered was really amazing, really really big, cooked to perfection and seasoned just perfectly... definitely worth the 40$. The only downside to the food was that it wasn't piping hot, just warm. Our server took forever to bring us our check, cashing out everyone around us except us and then finally gave us our bill. All in all this was a good place for a romantic date. The dress code was casual we dressed up a bit but I saw people in jeans. You really can't go here and spend less then 200$ including the tip so be prepared.
pretentious at best. This place is a toilet. They got my order wrong and overcooked my colleagues steak. Instead of getting me a new stake the wiped the dressing off, flipped it over and hoped I wouldn't notice.
I've Had Better Filet from Costco!. So, I went to Smith & Wollensky during Restaurant Week, thinking that if the food was as good as everyone says, than I'd be more than happy to pay full price. Well, not only will I never pay full price, I will tell everyone I know how horrible the food was. I'm not sure why they even participate in Restaurant Week; it seemed as if it was a bother to them to do so. From the salad to the cheesecake, the food was less than mediocre. Three of us got filet and two got crab cakes. The filet was almost impossible to swallow and the crab cakes were dry and had no flavor at all. They were all served with overdone, dried out roasted potatoes and steamed, totally flavorless broccoli. Earlier in the week I had gone to Plough and The Stars where the RW menu had several mouth watering choices (S&W only offered filet, salmon or crab cakes, again, why bother?). The sirloin steak with blue cheese butter at the Plough was melt in your mouth good and the service was outstanding. At Smith & Wollensky I got the distinct impression that they did not really care too much about my food because I was not paying full price. It was insulting.
fabulous steaks and great services. The best steak and seafood we have had in the city. Love this place and especially the bar crowd. I suggest the filet with crabmeat.
Did I need a bear knife at a steak house? No, it was Dead on Arrival..
That is the way the steak arrived...DOA. As we had theater tickets, there was not time for them to do it over. I should have asked for the doggie bag before the meat was cooked. The Caesar salad lacked Ingredients: anchovies, capers and egg yolks and who knows what else. It did have Croutons the size of meatballs. No problem I just used the Jim Bowie knife they gave me for meat. We ordered one of the two bottles of red that were under $50. It turned out they were sold out of both. The $56.00 bottle was my $18. favorite from home. (Both bottles did appear on the bill since they were ordered. That charge was removed later.)
So I asked for beer, well, nothing on tap, the six different beers were 50% Bud. and Lite types plus Heineken. The dessert was great. Which left me with a good taste in my mouth as I left, until I got to the attached parking garage. At least they admitted to over charging and corrected the bill.
So if you are a Bud. drinker that likes well done steak and a salad with Italian desssing and a great dessert by all means go.

This pricy steakhouse sports cushy leather booths, menus in heavy frames and giant moose heads. Ogle tony Rittenhouse Square happenings from your sidewalk table in warmer months. The manly menu highlights signature items: dense, smoky split pea soup; heavy-dressed Romaine salad covered in bacon; a deep-fried pork shank with a better exterior, than the fatty interior. Thickly sliced smoked salmon makes a nice starter, and red meat lovers gladly attack a tender rack of lamb or a giant, dry-aged T-bone.
Great steaks and service. After finishing a long day at the office I found this to be exactly waht I wanted. I had the best steak,great service and the atmosphere is just wonderous.
