In Short
This vast restaurant and bar, filled with dark wood, TVs, alt rock and Irish staffers, attracts the Phoenix Apertment's fresh-faced residents, along with patrons in button-downs or black leather pants. Just when you thought you could write off the Irish-theme pub fare, the meal arrives: ribbons of smoked salmon layered with light corn pancakes, foie gras and chicken pâté with raisin toast points.

This is a basic Irish pub. It is centrally located in the business district of Philadelphia. The food is ok. I like to sit out in the rotunda area, which is slightly less noisy and a nicer environment.

Tir Na Nog is a special spot for me, since it basically convinced me to want to move to Philadelphia. Strong praise, but I have good reasoning. First, Tir Na Nog has pretty awesome decor, most of it imported from Ireland. It's quite impressive overall, very warm and somewhat dark. It's a large place with 2 large bars, outdoor seating, and more indoor seat/booths. Personally, I'm a sit-at-the-bar guy. A brief warning -- the place gets quite busy on friday/saturday nights. Second, Tir is located in the Phoenix building, an upscale high-rise, and it seems a lot of the residents use it as their de-facto living room, especially on off nights (thursday, sunday). This results is a very friendly atmosphere, as there are plenty of regulars just relaxing at the bar. Likewise, the staff was very attentive and friendly, ready to offer advice about food or drinks or the city. It's this atmosphere, friendly, inviting, that made me realize what a great city Philly was. In fact, while visiting the bar a few times while in Philly for a conference I was adopted as a regular. However, man cannot live on atmosphere alone and Tir doesn't disappoint in the food and drink department either. In fact, the food is probably some of the best food I've ever had at a bar -- the shepards pie is fantastic. Likewise, their liquor and beer selection is impressive, particularly if you like upscale liquors like whiskeys, portos, etc. Please note that with the upscale setting come upscale prices: most appetizers started near $10 and entreess were more in the $15-20+.

My colleagues and I practically lived at Tir NA Nog after 5PM - friendly bartenders, tasty snacks. The atmosphere is dark and cozy, friendly and inviting. They specialize in updated Irish fare and a great selection of draft beers. Pricing is completely fair for what you get!
