Fairly weak cheesesteak product. I would equate this steak to one I had from Rick Olivieri's at the Reading Terminal Market. Thick, chewey sparse meat. Roll was decent. Not that cheap at $10.25 for steak and a soda including an extra $.75 for some shrooms. No thanks. Campo's is close and much better. D'allesandro's, Jim's Steaks, and even Phil's in Berwyn are much better.
Really good and avoid the place down the street campos. Really good and the guy behind the counter was so nice. The concierge at my hotel recommended them. It was a quick walk down market street. There is another place a half block away and I got identical steaks from each place to compare with my husband. This place was much better. And the people at Campos were downright rude.
This small Market Street shop brings Philly's favorite sandwich to Old City..
In Short
This spot taps into the sizable Old City lunch crowd by focusing on Philly's most famous sandwich. A luncheonette designed mostly for takeout, this narrow space is decorated with vintage pictures of historic Philadelphia. Beef and chicken steaks come with American, provolone or Whiz. Sonny's limited menu means the staff can focus their energies on getting the best possible ingredients for their sandwiches. On the side, get a cup of fries or gooey mozzarella sticks.
plenty of whiz. Sonny's seem to put more cheese wiz in their steak, which makes it really good. Olde City is a nice place to visit at nite too. The staff was extremely friendly; it is a nice place to sit and eat. I really like the old posters they hung up instead of the usually celebrities. Overall...good food.
Good Location, Not Much Else. It was my first Philly Cheesesteak experience. I was not impressed. The cheesesteak was good, but not as good as the price. The sparse environment reminded me of a franchise restaurant, and the staff acted as if I was bothering them when I placed my order. I could definitely appreciate the place after a late night at the bars, though.
The Best Steak Yet. This is the best steak i've ever had in my life. Pat's is great - still the second best i've ever had, but the quality of the meat at Sonny's puts it on top. It's also nice that it's located in Olde City, which makes it convenient.
Sonny's is the best. Sonny's is, without a doubt, the best cheesesteak place in Philly. I agree that Pats, Gino, Jims, and all the others are good, but this place brings it up a notch. First of all, they fill the cheesesteak with more steak, plain and simple. Next, the staff is extremely friendly, something which you never see at Pats and Ginos. Finally, its location makes it much easier to get to unless you live in South Philly. Its right at the 2nd st. stop of the El on Market street.
Best in Olde City. Bite to eat, fast, the best in the area and an awesome outside invironment.
