A slightly more upscale gem in the low-key, casual Italian Market. They do a three-course $30 prix-fixe Tuesday through Thursday night.

Paloma. We LOVE Paloma! The food is outstanding and the service is top-notch! From start -to- finish our meal was perfect. We'll definitely be back. Note: With their new location (763 S. 8th st.), Make sure to arrive 15 minutes early to find suitable (free) street parking -or- (free) Municipal lots. There's also a paid lot $13 on 7th street, that also takes Credit Cards.

Never disappointing. We have been to Paloma many times. We were back again on 1/24 and had another wonderful meal and evening, with great service and outstanding food for everyone at the table. The presentation and flavor of all of the dishes is outstanding. I wish the chef would come out and allow us to compliment his creations. And finally, you must finish your meal with one of the outstanding sorbets or desserts, all home made. My favorite is the Mexican chocolate sorbet. I am already looking forward to our next evening there.

Best Mexican Fusion in Philly!. Wow. After going last night, this has got to be my favorite restaurant in Philly. Absolutely worth the trek out to NE Philly! Innovative and exciting - favorites included the spicy beef dumplings in an orange-ginger sauce and filet mignon in a peppery espresso-chipotle- red wine reduction. Yum. The chef's wife is the pastry chef and bakes everything herself...make sure to try the fun sorbets with ingredients she brings back from Mexico (mango habeniero, lime coconut, cactus pear) or delightful and decadent white chocolate cheesecake with caramel and a dark chocolate crust.

Hmm, mushroom flan.... This restaurant is a surprising delight on overly commercialized Castor Ave. The decor is rather old-fashioned dark floral, but cozy. The food was generally pleasing and the sauces really exceled. The crab and tomato salad was delicate with a light lemon oil sauce. The mushroom flan, however, was the true winner of the appetizers. Warm, creamy and bursting with mushrooms-- it was DEE-LISH. The tilapia was also tasty except that the fish was so overly fried that it hardened the fish. The mashed potatoes that came with the fish paired with the gaufrettes and sauce were excellent. The chocolate chip pound cake was a bit too dry and dense. The Grand Marnier and Tequila creme brulee was unique in flavor and not too overwhelming with all the alcohol mentioned. It had the consistency of flan more so than creme brulee. Overall, I'd say Paloma is definitely worth a repeat visit.

FIND THIS GEM OUTSIDE OF CENTER CITY!. NOT TEX-MEX!!! A HIDDEN SMALL GEM WITH FREE PARKING OUTSIDE THE DOOR. WONDERFUL FRENCH BASED COOKING WITH SOME MEXICAN INGREDIENTS. DESERTS MADE BY THE CHEF'S WIFE VARY WONDERFULLY TO INCLUDE CAKES OF EASTERN EUROPEAN ORGIN THAT YOUR GRANDMA WISHED TO HAVE MADE. THE BEST RARE FRUIT SORBETS. LOCATED IN THE SAFE OXFORD CIRCLE AREA. HIGHEST OF ZAGOT RATINGS AND WILL STAND UP TO THE FOOD OF ANY OVERPRICED CENTER CITY RESTAURANT.

Frexican. What a remarkable blend of Continental ingredients and inspirations, modern American presentation, and killer Mexican/Southwestern spices. This still largely undiscovered gem in the most unlikely northeast Philadelphia neighborhood can hold its own with anything in the region. Prices are terrific, good bar, and fine wine list. Top pick!
