What People Are Saying About Tangerine

In Short – In the large dining room, flickering cutout lanterns and dozens of candles cast shadowy patterns onto low leather chairs and marbleized columns. The effect is neither quaint nor elegant but surprisingly impressive nevertheless. Generically labeled as "Mediterranean," the cuisine takes familiar international bases--like gnocchi, ceviche and filet mignon au poivre--then adds a splash of North African flavoring. Portions are meant to be shared. The drink menu is similarly eclectic.
Editor's Tips
- What To Drink:
- Get in the spirit of the place by ordering the Paul Bowles martini or the restaurant's namesake, a creamsicle-like concoction.
- Where To Sit:
- For those interested in sipping potent beverages and occasionally making out, seats are available at the sleek bar up front.
My favorite restaurant in center city!

I came here with my boyfriend and we were both blown away!! We were seated promptly, and the waitstaff/hostesses were very friendly. I am completely shocked by how many poor reviews there are for the food. I thought the meal was incredible. I highly recommend the steak or the salmon. The ambience is very romantic- not really a "family" restaurant. I can't wait to go back here!!
- Pros: Ambience, incredible food, great bar
- Cons: Really- none
Dull food, overblown decor in Old City
by TomInPhilly at Citysearch
The minute I walked in I knew it was a mistake. I have a thing against theme restaurants. And this one was as bad as walking into the one beside Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland. It's like one of those designers from "Trading Spaces" was given a blank check and told to give the place a Moroccan feel. They're hoping you'll be so awed by the dramatics of the decor you won't mind the mediocre food.
Half of what you pay will go towards candles...probably about 1000 in the place.
Started out with the mixed appetizer plate...that came with COLD pita bread.! From the fridge COLD! Couldn't someone from the kitchen have thrown it on a grill for like 40 seconds? And the rest of the app? BLAND. Unlike any North African I've ever had. And swimming in olive oil. Like food they serve tourists.
Really disappointing. Can't recommend it. Unless you're in high school and you want your date to think you're cool. Just hope she doesn't know food.
- Pros: Restaurant as theater.
- Cons: There's better theater and better restaurants.
Best Service in Town

The Decor is breathtaking with candles everywhere. You feel like if you are in an exotic oasis. The service was excellent. A guy from Spain guided us through the whole meal. He recommended a great wine that matched perfectly our entrees, his recommendations were fantastic. I ordered the whole fish, my wife the duck and we loved. We felt like if we were traveling or something. For sure we will come back again
- Pros: Service, Ambience
- Cons: Chairs
Bring a man - you will get better service.

We had reservations for 2 for a Saturday nite - (made well in advance as they called me to confirm our attendance), however we still had to wait about 30 minutes to get a table. We sat in the lounge - no waiter came by to take our drink order - however the host came by and we were comped to 2 drinks. We ordered a few appetizers to share and more drinks and realized we were full. My friend told the waiter we decided not to proceed with our 4th order and he indicated "he did not put it in anyway". We were then given the check without any inquiry as to whether we wanted coffee, dessert or anything else. However the tables next to me were given the "full service" treatment by the waiter. My friend and I concluded that since we were not accompanied by a man - we were not to be taken seriously and therefore the table must be cleared asap for patrons (like couples) who might pay more. Our bill was over $100.00 - and the food was good. Would i go back - only if armed with a man.
- Pros: Ambience, Food & Drinks
- Cons: Valet - $17!!!: Service was not up to par
Amazing food AND service

The decor of this place is out of this world. I was surprised that for a Philadelphia restaurant that has been around for a few years it seems to set the bar for luxurious and dramatic decor. The food was sensational with more than a few appetizers that I would have liked to try. The Kobe sirloin appetizer was so delicious, my wife and I still talked about it the next day. The entrees were just as good, with a variety of dishes from all over Europe including quite a few Middle Eastern inspired dishes. We were just so happy to walk out of this restaurant having had such a nice time with really impeccable service.
- Pros: Service, Food, Decor
- Cons: Busy Saturday Night
