Tips for Second Bank of the United States/Portrait Gallery

October 26, 2006

Portraits of the people who made Independence Park an historical pilgrimage spot hang in the building that housed the country's second bank.. In Short
The Second Bank of the United States was chartered in 1816, and the building that housed it from 1824 until its dissolution under Andrew Jackson was designed by William Strickland (who also designed the Merchants' Exchange). In 1844, the building was revived as the United States Customs House; it was relieved of its duties in 1934, and restored as part of Independence Park in 1974.
