What Our Expert Scouts Say

May 09, 2013

Everything you've heard or read about Standard Tap? It's all true. There's a reason that this is one of the top bars in the city: It's as honest, accomplished, and flat-out enjoyable as you'll find on the east coast. The beer selection in particular will stun you...and make you seriously thirsty just reading the list.

The grandaddy of the Philly "gastropub," Standard Tap is always such a well-rounded experience. Try for a seat on the sweet deck in summer.

Perfect place to eat animals you've never eaten before. They have the ability to turn raccoon into a delectable sandwich. (They don't really serve raccoon, but they have some exotic stuff, just try it.)

excellent gastropub. Standard Tap is a no frills, seat yourself first come first serve basis. Beer and Dinner menus are written on the chalk board and the beer list changes regularly. They offer a great selection of draught beer and the food is delicious. They offer a range of salads, mussels and clams, oysters, duck confit, chicken pie, etc. I had the duck salad and fried oysters - both were excellent. My husband had the chicken pie, it was a great comfort food dish. The one down fall is the service, the server we had was not all that knowledgable on the beers or very descriptive when we had menu questions. But we lingered w/ friends and were not rushed to leave. Definitely a good neighborhood spot.

great food. I was really surprised by the great food and beer selection. The neighborhood is so much hipper than I remember it. I can't wait to return to try some of the other menu items.

awesome burgers. As a passionate lover of beer and burgers, the Standard Tap is absolutely one of my favorite spots in Philly. Always a fantastic selection of local brews that are served by the most knowledgable bartenders I've encountered. Just tell them what kind of beer you're in the mood for and they'll do the rest. They've never done me wrong. The Standard Burger literally tastes as if It was made by God himself. It's common knowledge in these parts that this is the best burger in Philly. Even the mushrooms on the burger are incredible! Put it this way, my father loved it,and he doesn't like anything. The crowds usually a friendly mix of local blue-collar and professional types. I've also had many interesting conversations with out-of-towners.

Awesome, awesome, awesome for weekend brunch.. So maybe you're not feeling so well on Saturday or Sunday morning, and all you really want to do is chill out with some excellent traditional american brunch fare and maybe have a hair-of-the-dog mimosa. Standard Tap is the place to do it: not too bright, not too loud, and not overwhelmingly busy, with food that's fresh and flavorful without trying too hard.

A Philly favorite for good beer and hearty barroom fare.. In Short
Cozy American pub features dim lighting, big wooden booths and a decent jukebox. Patrons include neighborhood artists, families with baby carriers and anyone who eschews high-maintenance bar crowds. Local microbrews (Dogfish Head, Victory and Yards) complement grilled cheese and roasted veggie sandwiches, fries and lightly battered smelts. Most come for thick burgers. Others enjoy fresh seafood, including chilled scallop and citrus salad. Homemade granola and yogurt, omelets and bloody marys are served for weekend brunch.

Bob and Jerry Made My Night!. Last night I stopped by because i had read that Capitol Years, a band that i've been trying to catch for a few years now; was playing on Wednesday. Well I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent service from the upstairs bartender where I chose a new wonderful beer with a catchy name called Heavyweight Lunacy. The name alone was reason enough to like it. The highlight of my night was meeting 2 cool cats sitting at the bar by the name of Bob and Jerry who entertained me with colorful conversation. As it stands I showed up 1 night too late to see the band so I had a seat and had a wonderful time anyway. I must admit the ugly guy ratio is still alive and well at Standard Tap but the beer, the ambience and the bar menu was was right on!

All the beers taste like Miller?!?!. Wow - that was a harsh review. I've been going to the "Tap" for years and have never had a bad experience there - suit or no suit. We've even taken my parents there (in their 70's), and while the jukebox can be loud on a Saturday night, service, staff and food have always been excellent.

Food (yes - the menus are on blackboards) consists of bar standards, as well as some more adventerous items (venison, whole fish, buffalo etc.). The menu is fairly evenly divided between sandwiches, entrees and salads.

Beer is all local to the PA/NJ/DE area. You should always be able to find some Victory, Dogfish Head, Yards, Sly Fox, Flying Fish etc. beers on tap. Taps are always fresh and cleaned religiously. I dare say that none of those local beers even comes close to tasting like Miller (does Miller even have flavor?).
