What Our Expert Scouts Say

Cuba Libre
October 11, 2012

Cuba Libre is proof that fun food and serious food need not be mutually exclusive. Here, a great atmosphere and stellar preparations coexist beautifully. Just don't over-do it with the cocktails, though that's a difficult rule to follow here...the mojitos are epic.

Great food, great service. I went to this place for the first time last week. This place is very nice inside. Very nice decoration. The service was great. We got seated right away. Must make reservation at least a week early. Food is great. If you don't know what to order just ask they will explain everything in the menu for you. Try grilled pineapple mojito. its amazing. This place can be very expensive so try to go during the restaurant week. I would definitely go back again

Pushy!. The staff here... what is their problem?? I have only been here at night while they were functioning as a club. I remember being ignored by the bartender, even when he'd seen me try to get his attention and wasn't serving anyone else. The bouncers walking around were pretty obnoxious too. It felt like they were constantly telling me and my boyfriend that we couldn't stand places, and we had to move, and they were just very controlling and pushy. Then as soon as 2AM came, it was "everyone get out immediately, no you can't wait inside." It was December at the time, and freezing outside. The music and dancing is pretty good if you manage to not let the staff get to you. Drinks are expensive.

Super Cuban Cuisine!. Great food, great ambiance! From the flurpy to the durpy, we had the time of our lives. Don't order the fried whale though.

Disappointing. I first went to Cuba Libre in Atlantic city and it was absolutely amazing! My friend and I wanted to go to a fun place to eat and drink and I thought Cuba Libre would be a great pick! I was wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! The appetizer was decent but the entrees were disappointing especially for how much they were priced!!!!!!!!!!! The rice tasted like take out chinese rice and both our entrees were barely mediocre and plain. They need some advice from their Atlantic city restaurant. It was also interesting because we noticed a group kept on complaining to the manager and it seemed they ended up leaving without paying the bill and eating their food. However, The atmosphere was cool and they did have late night dancing.

Best Brunch. My significant other and I had brunch here this past Sunday, and it was absolutely fantastic. The stuffed French Toast was to die for, as was the Cuban Coffee with coconut milk. If I could make both of these things myself, I'd never eat anything else. Also, I loved the ambience - the music was fantastic. I can't wait to go back!

Excellent brunch. I went there for brunch with my girlfriends on a recent visit to Philly. We are all from New York city so we know good food when see it, and this was really really good food. The manager of the restaurant was so nice and friendly and recommended some excellent dishes. I tried the omelet with crabmeat and hollandaise sauce and the cuban coffee with steamed coconut milk, both were out of this world. I would definitely go back and try dinner.

Unremarkable!. My friend and I were there recently, and we left the restaurant feeling very underwhelmed. I could not agree more with the previous comments posted by Jeffers. The interior of the restaurant was beautiful, our server was professional and pleasant. The only ambience that was a bit off kilter was the lighting, which I found to be a bit on the dark side (I wasn't able to see the food on my plate).

I had the tuna entree which, as Jeffers notes on another dish, was supposed to come with coconut. The coconut ingredient was imperceptible, and the sugar cane skewer through the tuna did nothing for the meat, but added to the frustration of having to deal with it. My friend ordered the Pollo al Ajillo , chicken stuffed with chorizo, which was, again, a main ingredient that was MIA. He had to cut through at least half the chicken before getting a small hint of chorizo. The part of the chicken that did not have the chorizo was extremely bland and seemed underseasoned. The food wasn't terrible, but we both expected the meal to be a lot more flavorful as befits something from the Carribean.

The only item that we enjoyed were the fried plantains appetizer. Mojitos were very tasty. Overall, the dinner check was a little too much for what it was.

Any recommendations for good, authentic Cuban food?

You May Leave Feeling Like The Joke Was On You For Wasting Your Money There. That Is Only If You Know Good Food. Tourists can disregard this review, This Place Was Built For You.. Let me get the kind words out of the way. The restaurant is beautiful. However, as you take each additional bite of the incredibly mediocre, overpriced food this fact will irritate you more and more. It's about this time when you realize that you are sitting in one of those restaurants that lures you in with the great "concept" decor and then begins to roll you through a dining experience that makes even a native feel like an exploited tourist. I dined with three others and was amazed that almost every one of the three appetizers and four entrees started off with an incredibly flat first bite which was quickly followed up with a series of increasingly boring consecutive bites. To start, the rock shrimp and scallop ceviche presented me with a tedious duel between my fork and another one of those totally impractical edible garnishes. When I finally got to the goods, I found the rock shrimp and scallops to be lacking in flavor and the supposed coconut component of the dish to be completely absent. I mean, this is Cuban food - bright, fresh and explosive with flavor, right? The best part of this dish was the completely unadorned avocado on top. The trio of empanadas appetizer contained a sample of thee different fillings which were only slightly distinguishable from each other. They were also dried out. If you barely let your imagination run wild you could envision them sitting for some time, precooked under a heat lamp. They did at least have a tasty sweet relish that accompanied them. Well, I think that it was tasty, then again I could have just been desperate for flavor of any type. The Arroz con Pollo was fun, kinda like going on an easter egg hunt - barely any chicken or chorizo to be found anywhere. The flavor was pretty uneventful until, ...until you got to the garnish, a wonderfully vibrant sprig of cilantro. The red snapper was covered in a sauce that emanated a canned tomato fillet flavor. I'm Out of room. Rushed service. If you don't value Ur money, go for it

go salsa!. i have yet to eat here, but the salsa dancing on the weekends is great fun, in spite of practically dancing on top of people.

Quasi-Cuban, still delicious. Not authentic Cuban, but Cuban with a twist. Mojitos are good, meals very good. Chorizo stuffed chicken was delicious. Appetisers a little small, and the menu was not cheap. But if you're up for a nice evening with friends, or somthing kinda trendy/romantic, this is a great place.
