Editorial Review for Manayunk Brewery and Restaurant – by Elizabeth Gross
In Short
A bright neon sign guides customers to the sushi bar in the massive interior, but this renovated textile mill's main draw is its three outside bars, two decks and one patio. Needless to say, warm weather and cold beer are a perfect match here. Plus, the house-brewed beer is exotic. Varied New American cuisine ranges from big burgers to seared ahi tuna to chicken Marsala.

We were seated promptly at about seven on a Saturday night. The waitress was extremely friendly, talking to us but not being overbearing. We ordered a sampler of all the beer, and we tried them each out. The waitress kept her eye on us but did not come over until we'd finished the sampler. I appreciated this as sometimes waitresses get a little uppity with the asking for orders. We were not extremely hungry but we both ordered soup. I also ordered a spinach and artichoke dip/hummus plate and my boyfriend a goat cheese and beet salad. Due to the prices we expected MUCH larger portions. His salad cost ten dollars and did not even fill the small dinner plate on which it was served. My soup I recognized -- it looked just like Progresso. My dip plate came with about four pieces of pita bread, three carrots, and three pieces of celery. I mean really. These are not things that cost a lot of money! They can afford to add some extra lettuce to a salad, or put more pita on my plate. For dessert, since we were drinking pumpkin beer, we asked if they had pumpkin pie. We ordered one slice, which took about ten minutes to arrive. There seemed to be a miscommunication between the waitress and the kitchen. Finally the pie came out...and it was partially frozen. We complained; they took it off the check; we paid and left. All in all it was not a very good experience. The beer was fine (nothing superb), the staff was extremely friendly, but the food was way way over priced and not very good. Definitely not worth the trip to Manayunk from the city.
Pros: Friendly service, beer okay
Cons: Food quality, parking is difficult

I "dined" at this establishment on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 around 9:30 p.m. with another patron. The restaurant was not very busy. It took about 20 minutes to receive our beers because according to our server, “the bar was slow” (first clue of her “it’s not my fault” attitude). We were seated with about 10 people in the dining area and there were a few groups near the bar, but no reason that it should have taken so long to receive our drinks. Another 15 minutes go by before our server took our order of an appetizer of pork dumplings, a roast beef sandwich, and a salad for dinner. Our dumplings came out first, which were pretty similar to the kind in the Costco frozen food section, nothing fabulous. As we finished our dumplings, our server tells us that the kitchen staff “refused” to make our meals because she placed the order in for the dumplings (which were labeled as “appetizers”) to come out first, then our meals to come out second. She said we could complain to the manager about it, but there was nothing she could do. We didn’t complain to the manager, and instead left (who knows how long that could have taken to see that person). We didn’t want to leave her a tip because of our frustration with her “it’s not my fault” attitude, but we didn’t want to wait another 15-20 minutes to get change (and risk the chance of not getting dinner anywhere). I’m usually patient when it comes to food service if there is a reason for a delay or if a dish is not available, but this server was unprofessional in the handling of this back of the house issue. My companion (who is a waiter) agreed that she shouldn’t have put the ball in our court to beg for our dinner to a manager and instead should have resolved the issue with her manager and the kitchen staff. Because of this negative experience, I won’t go back to this restaurant. We went down the street to Flat Rock where they served us food and had way better beer.
Cons: Poor service
