Philadelphia's Must-Have Fall Fashion 2009
Updated: September 16, 2009
Never fans of the "must-have" mentality of advertising, we offer, with our bemused apologies, an assortment of the fall clothing items that fashion marketers are insisting must be purchased by anyone--immediately, as in, right now--not wishing to have all of their lifetime accumulation of "cool" points seized. What we like about the selected body coverings is that they express individuality and a funky and unique sense of style. Now, go, you: run off, lemming-like, to buy them.

If you've never quite gotten over wanting to look like cool dude Judd Nelson in "The Breakfast Club" or Matt Dillon’s Dallas Winston in "The Outsiders" take solace in knowing that … the jean jacket is back. And not just any jean jacket. Matthew's featuring the men’s Comune B Sza Jacket, which is fitted to show off those muscles and pre-washed to look like you've used them to pull a car out of the mud or best a foe encroaching upon your lady. According to Comune’s description, for just $76, you can participate in its culture of people who “embrace the rawness and imperfections of everyday life … and reflect the lifestyle of carefree idealism.” Now that, we think, is truly cool.

Show up at the Philly Fringe fest showing off a new BRYAN Bryan Bradley fringe jacket, which is one of two pieces for sale now at Knit Wit from the designer’s new line, conceived to be more affordable than his original eponymous brand. Priced at $398, this straight, below-the-hip women’s fall jacket is knitted from viscose, nylon, cotton and wool. Four widely spaced buttons, flared sleeves, a neat collar, two front pockets and plenty of that fringe should help the indoor-outdoor coat go from business-meeting attire to an offbeat performance at Philly’s favorite left-of-center festival.

You may look like every other guy out in Old City on a Saturday night, but you’ll have the advantage of knowing that your $98 checked button-down long-sleeved shirt came from Art in the Age, a shop that’s garnered tons o’ cred for its embrace of artistic liberalism, intellectual rigeur and parties that feature neato booze created by the peeps at its cousin store, Sailor Jerry 46294457. So what does it matter that this benign grey man-blouse resembles the ones your mom bought you for your first day of third grade? Your purchase came from a place that claims its “community of free thinkers and artistic innovators delivers inspiration and aspiration back to The People".

Esprit

And speaking of third grade, what self-respecting gen-X’er without amnesia doesn’t remember enviously mocking half the girls in the class for every week wearing the same five Esprit outfits as half of the other girls in the class? Well, dear 40-something grown women who would never, ever hold on to insecurities or grudges cultivated in pre-adolescence, now is your time for one-upmanship. With the new Esprit store open on Rittenhouse Row, you too can boast a $79.50 green and grey cotton-blend zig-zag dress that fits snugly uptop and flairs gently to mid-thigh. Wear it with pride and just pray that no one else in your office wears it the same day.
